How to Wash Towels Properly to Keep Them Soft, Fresh, and Long-Lasting

Towels are one of those everyday essentials we use all the time, yet rarely stop to think—how should we wash them so they stay soft, absorbent, and pleasantly fresh for as long as possible? Here’s a tried-and-true, simple routine that really works!

1. Step One – Double Wash Without Detergent

Before you start using towels (especially new ones, but also “tired” ones), wash them twice at 40°C using only water—no detergent, softener, or other additives. This step helps rinse out factory residues and remove excess lint. As a result, towels become much more absorbent and softer.

2. Less is More – Even With Detergent

Use only a small amount of liquid detergent without bleach in your daily washes. Using too much can build up in the fibers and make towels feel stiff. Also, it’s best to skip fabric softeners altogether—they coat the fibers with a thin layer that reduces the towel’s ability to absorb water.

3. Temperature and Load Size Matter

Wash towels at 40–60°C, depending on how often and how heavily they’re used.

Don’t overload the washing machine—towels need space to rinse and spin thoroughly.
A full, tightly packed machine may leave towels only partially cleaned and with an unpleasant smell.

4. Proper Drying = Soft Towels

Ideally, tumble-dry towels on a low to medium heat setting. This helps keep the fibers fluffy.
If air-drying, avoid direct sunlight and over-drying, which can make towels stiff.

5. How Often Should You Wash Them?

Towels should be washed after every 3–4 uses. This helps maintain hygiene, prevent unpleasant odors, and keep your towels fresh and clean.

Towels are the unsung heroes of daily comfort. With a little attention and proper care, they’ll last longer, feel great on your skin, and always be ready—just like new.

Wishing you softness and freshness every day!
